Equipment

  • 1 Mixing bowl
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 Baking dish
  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 pastry brush
  • 1 Knife

Ingredients

  • 6 whole apples peeled and cored
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup ice water
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt, then cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add ice water, mixing until dough forms.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness.
  • Cut the dough into 6 squares.
  • Place an apple in the center of each square and bring the corners up over the apple, pinching the edges to seal.
  • Arrange the wrapped apples in a baking dish.
  • In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract; bring to a boil.
  • Pour the sauce over the dumplings in the baking dish.
  • Bake for 40 minutes or until the apples are tender and the pastry is golden brown.
  • Allow the dumplings to rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra tips, ensure the apples are firm and not overripe to maintain their shape during baking. Adjust the amount of sugar in the sauce to suit your taste preference. Serve the dumplings warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
