  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 6 small apples
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  • Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in cold water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a 12x18 inch rectangle.
  • Peel and core the apples.
  • Place an apple on each square of dough.

  • Fold the corners of the dough over the apples and seal the edges.
  • Place the dumplings in a baking dish.
  • In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and water.
  • Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  • Pour sauce over dumplings in the baking dish.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes or until the apples are tender.
  • Allow dumplings to rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For the best results, ensure the dough is chilled before rolling to prevent it from becoming sticky. When choosing apples, opt for firm varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for a balance of tartness and sweetness. These apple dumplings are delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
