Equipment

  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 Baking dish
  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 pastry brush
  • 1 Knife
  • 1 peeler

Ingredients

  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 6-7 tablespoon cold water
  • 4 medium apples peeled and cored
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a bowl, mix the flour and salt, then cut in the shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until dough holds together.
  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness.
  • Cut the dough into squares large enough to wrap each apple.
  • Combine granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  • Place an apple in the center of each dough square and fill the core with sugar mixture.
  • Dot each apple with butter, then fold the dough over the apple, sealing edges.
  • Place wrapped apples in a baking dish.
  • In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, and vanilla extract, bringing it to a boil.
  • Pour the sauce over the dumplings in the baking dish.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let dumplings rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, choose apples that are firm and slightly tart to balance the sweetness of the filling. It's essential to seal the dough edges properly to prevent leakage during baking. If you prefer, you can add raisins or nuts for an extra layer of flavor, and serve the dumplings with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat.
