Equipment

  • 1 Mixing bowl
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 measuring spoon set
  • 1 9x13 inch baking pan
  • 1 Spatula
  • 1 Oven

Ingredients

  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  • In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the applesauce, eggs, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix well.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Fold in the chopped walnuts if using.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly with a spatula.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to rest in the pan for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best results, make sure the butter is at room temperature before creaming with the sugar to ensure a smooth and fluffy batter. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can omit the walnuts or replace them with raisins. This cake pairs well with a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream on top.
