Equipment

  • 1 large skillet
  • 1 Wooden spoon
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 measuring spoon set
  • 1 sharp knife
  • 1 Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 4 cups onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon thyme dried
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become translucent, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, salt, black pepper, and thyme.
  • Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply caramelized, about 30 minutes.
  • Add water to deglaze the skillet, scraping any brown bits from the bottom.
  • Simmer until the mixture thickens and reaches a jam-like consistency, about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let the jam rest for 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  • Transfer the jam to a jar or airtight container for storage.

Notes

For the best results, use sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla for a balanced flavor. If you prefer a more savory jam, reduce the amount of brown sugar. Caramelized Onion Jam pairs well with cheese boards, sandwiches, or grilled meats, and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
