Equipment

  • 1 Baking dish 9x13
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 medium mixing bowl
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 Spatula
  • 1 measuring cup set
  • 1 measuring spoon set
  • 1 Oven mitt

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 cups boiling water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
  • Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and stir until smooth.
  • Pour the batter into a greased 9x13 baking dish and spread evenly.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder.
  • Sprinkle the brown sugar and cocoa mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish.
  • Carefully pour boiling water over the mixture in the baking dish without stirring.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes or until the top is set and slightly crispy.
  • Remove the cobbler from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, serve the chocolate cobbler warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. When pouring the boiling water over the batter, be gentle and avoid mixing, as this will create the gooey chocolate sauce beneath the cake layer. Adjust the sugar levels to your taste if you prefer a less sweet dessert.
