Country Apple Dumplings

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Shortening
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 8 Medium apples, peeled and cored
  • 8 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar
  • 2 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  • Cut in shortening with a rolling pin until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in milk until dough forms a ball.
  • Roll out dough on a floured surface and cut into 8 squares.
  • Place one apple in the center of each square.
  • Fill the center of each apple with 1 tablespoon of sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
  • Fold dough over apples and pinch edges to seal.
  • Place dumplings in a greased baking dish.
  • In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Bring mixture to a boil and then pour over the dumplings.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, until apples are tender and pastry is golden brown.
  • Let dumplings rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, choose firm apples like Granny Smith for a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness. When rolling out the dough, ensure it's not too thin to prevent breaking during baking. You can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of the warm dumplings for an extra indulgent treat.
