Equipment

  • 1 Large pot
  • 1 colander
  • 1 potato masher or ricer
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 Medium saucepan
  • 1 Wooden spoon
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 Knife
  • 1 Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup whole milk warmed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water.
  • Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
  • Reduce heat to a simmer and cook the potatoes for 15-20 minutes until tender.
  • Drain the potatoes using a colander.
  • Return the drained potatoes to the pot and let them sit for 1-2 minutes to dry out.
  • Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or pass them through a ricer into a mixing bowl.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat and add the warmed milk.
  • Pour the butter and milk mixture over the mashed potatoes.
  • Stir in salt and pepper with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy.
  • Let the mashed potatoes rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra fluffiness, ensure the potatoes are thoroughly dried after draining and before mashing. Using a ricer instead of a masher can create an even airier texture. Additionally, warming the milk prevents the mixture from cooling down too quickly, which can help maintain the desired consistency. Adjust seasoning according to preference, and consider adding roasted garlic or herbs for extra flavor.
