Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions thinly sliced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Melt butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Add sliced onions to the pan and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.

  • Mix all the ingredients with a wooden spoon until well combined.
  • Transfer the mixture into an oven-safe loaf pan, pressing it down evenly.
  • Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese on top of the meatloaf.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  • Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best results, ensure that the onions are thoroughly caramelized to impart a rich, sweet flavor to the meatloaf. You can also experiment with adding a splash of balsamic vinegar to the onions while they caramelize for added depth. Additionally, using a blend of ground meats like beef and pork helps to keep the meatloaf juicy and flavorful.
