Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour a 9x9 inch baking pan.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the white sugar and molasses.
  • Add the hot water to the mixture and whisk until combined.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.
  • Slowly add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  • Beat in the egg until the batter is smooth.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  • Bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

For an extra moist gingerbread cake, consider adding a tablespoon of applesauce to the batter. If you prefer a spicier flavor, increase the amount of ginger or cloves slightly. Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful treat.
