Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 Frying pan
  • 1 slotted spoon
  • 1 Paper towel-lined plate
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 Measuring spoon

Ingredients

  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3 tablespoon butter cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup water cold
  • 1 cup vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and mix until crumbly.
  • Gradually add cold water to the mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough gently on a floured surface until smooth.
  • Divide the dough into equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Flatten each dough ball slightly with a rolling pin.
  • Carefully place the flattened dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  • Remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Allow the dumplings to rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For the best results, ensure the butter is cold when adding it to the dry ingredients, as this helps create a flaky texture. Be cautious when frying, as the oil can splatter; maintain a medium heat to ensure even cooking. Enjoy the dumplings as a side dish with your favorite Jamaican meals or as a snack on their own.
