Equipment

  • 1 Baking sheet
  • 1 sharp knife
  • 1 Cutting board
  • 1 Small mixing bowl
  • 1 Spoon
  • 1 pastry brush (optional
  • 1 Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 baguette thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 ounce cream cheese softened
  • 2 tablespoon sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon fresh dill finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives finely chopped
  • 4 ounce smoked salmon thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon capers drained
  • 1 tablespoon red onion finely minced
  • 1 pinch black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 lemon optional; cut into small wedges; for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Arrange the baguette slices in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  • Brush the tops of the baguette slices lightly with olive oil.
  • Bake the baguette slices for 6–8 minutes, or until they are lightly golden and crisp, then let them cool slightly.
  • In the small mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, lemon juice, dill, and half of the chives, stirring until smooth.
  • Season the cream mixture with a pinch of black pepper and adjust lemon or herbs to taste.
  • Spread a small dollop of the cream cheese mixture onto each cooled baguette slice.
  • Top each crostini with a folded piece of smoked salmon.
  • Sprinkle a few capers and a small pinch of minced red onion over each crostini.
  • Garnish with the remaining chopped chives and serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side if desired.

Notes

For best results, toast the baguette just until crisp so it stays crunchy under the topping but doesn’t become too hard to bite, and allow it to cool so the cream mixture doesn’t melt. Smoked salmon can be quite salty, so taste before adding extra salt and balance flavors with lemon juice and fresh herbs. Assemble the crostini shortly before serving to prevent sogginess, or keep all components prepared separately and build them at the last minute. You can vary the herbs, swap cream cheese for mascarpone, or add thin cucumber slices under the salmon for extra freshness and texture.
