Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 pound sausage sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 bell pepper chopped
  • 2 stalks celery chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 sweet potatoes peeled and diced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups cooked rice

Instructions
 

  • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  • Add sliced sausage to the pot and cook until browned.
  • Remove sausage and set aside, leaving the oil in the pot.
  • Add onion, bell pepper, and celery to the pot, sautéing until softened.
  • Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Add diced sweet potatoes and pour in chicken broth.
  • Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, cayenne pepper, and thyme.
  • Add bay leaves and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Return sausage to the pot and add shrimp.
  • Cook for an additional 10 minutes, until shrimp are cooked through.
  • Remove bay leaves and let the gumbo rest for 10 minutes.
  • Serve gumbo over cooked rice.

Notes

To enhance the flavor, consider using a homemade chicken broth or stock, and be cautious with the cayenne pepper if you prefer a milder spice level. Additionally, the gumbo flavors meld even more if allowed to sit overnight in the refrigerator before reheating and serving.
